Girl Rising DVD Review and Global Campaign

        Its really weird but until I met my husband I was a very dominant female and felt very strongly about woman being successful and taking care of themselves.  I've watched too many abusive relationships growing up as well girls who felt insignificant to the men around them.  I've even dealt with quite a few situations where parents were actually encouraging their daughters to drop out of high school once they had a boyfriend who they could marry.


        Can you say WOW?!  What the hell is wrong with society and how we value our women and girls.  I thought that time was well in the past but it seems the older I get the more I realize these terrible, degrading, sexist situations are still happening all over the world.

        My mother has always been the dominant one in my parents relationship as she is a private business owner and holds a very difficult and financially rewarding career.  She has been a very unforgiving person when it comes to me NOT earning my own, supporting myself, and being a strong individual.  I truly pride myself in being as independent, opinionated, and strong willed as I am.

        I was recently asked to review the movie/documentary, Girl Rising originally released in March, 2013 and I knew it was something I had to watch myself and share with my teenage daughter.  Girl Rising is both a movie AND a global campaign.  "Meet nine unforgettable girls in the groundbreaking film that launched a global movement for girls’ education."

        The Synopsis says "From Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins (Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience), Girl Rising journeys around the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Girls from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Peru, Nepal, and Sierra Leone confront tremendous challenges and overcome nearly impossible odds to achieve their dreams.

Distinguished writers from each girl’s country were enlisted to bring the girls’ experiences to life, while an impressive line-up of actors, including Blanchett, Streep, and Hathaway, along with Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek, Selena Gomez, Priyanka Chopra, Chloe Moretz, Freida Pinto, Alicia Keys and Kerry Washington, lend voices to these stories."

        I love that this whole movement also encourages this be shared with the sons, boys, and men in our lives as well.  It helps teach them to love, respect, and support us in our journeys through life.  I thought this was a very touching and inspirational film which both made me cry and feel motivated to make even more of a change than I have.

        My only complaint was that I wish we had included a story of someone from the U.S. as we struggle here with tons of horrid situations in our own backyard. I know there are some pretty terrible countries out there who have it a lot worse than us however I think the focus needs to be world wide.

Recommendation:  Although this is expensive for a DVD in my eyes, I loved the inspiration it sparked within myself as well as the motivation behind the movement!  I think this is worth a purchase no matter who you are.
